Eight to twelve minutes. Second grade is also where reading aloud becomes a shared job: one page each works better than one story each, because a page is short enough that nobody loses the thread.

- Most of them, yes, though not in one go at first. A page each — you, then them — gets further than asking them to read the whole thing.
- How are these different from first grade?
- The middle. In a first-grade story something happens and is put right; here a choice is made and it costs something before it comes right.
