Every evening, when the sun slipped down behind the hills and soft dusk wrapped its arms around the forest, Larry the cat set off on his magical journey.

In his fluffy little paws he carried a small linen pouch, filled to the brim with glowing star lanterns. Stepping carefully along the winding forest paths, Larry hung each tiny light upon the branches, so they might brighten the cozy burrows and bring every creature in the woods calm and sweet dreams.

The animals waited eagerly for Larry — they could hardly wait for him to come. To them, he was a true and gentle wizard. His lanterns filled the forest with a warm glow, a glow that could thaw even the coldest, darkest nights.

Ruby and Max, two curious little bear cubs with soft round ears and funny round tummies, loved to snuggle on their warm blanket by the window and watch a star lantern flicker quietly on its branch. Its light reminded them of summer evenings, when Mama Bear rocked them gently and hummed a soft, sleepy song.

Harry the hedgehog, a small and prickly traveler, was always looking for a place to curl up in peace. And it was right beneath a lantern that he felt his very best — where the soft glow brushed the leaves, and the shadows seemed to whisper a lullaby. The whole forest seemed to hold its breath, drinking in the light that wrapped around every branch and every little path.

Gloria the owl, wise keeper of the nighttime woods, sat upon her favorite branch and watched with care that not a single light went out too soon — for she believed each one was a piece of the peace the forest so needed after dark.

One evening, as Larry was finishing his rounds, his gaze fell upon the great oak where the squirrel cubs Lily and Jack lived. There, where a little lantern usually flickered, all was dark.

It was the squirrel cubs' favorite lantern, and it was gone. “How strange!” fretted Larry. “Wherever could it have wandered off to?”

Without wasting a single minute, Larry set out to search. He looked across the clearings, peeked under the bushes, and hunted through the fallen leaves, but the lantern seemed to have melted clean away into the evening hush.

And just when his hope had nearly flickered out, he spotted tiny footprints in the earth, trailing off deep into the forest.

They led Larry to a small hill, tucked away among the trees. In the quiet of the night a strange sound suddenly rose — a soft, trembling melody, like a lullaby. Larry nudged gently between the branches and froze in wonder.

Right there in the middle of the little hollow, on a patch of soft grass, sat a small rabbit. In his paws glimmered the familiar star lantern, and the rabbit was singing ever so quietly, as if trying to rock someone unseen to sleep.

“So there you are!” Larry whispered softly, careful not to frighten the timid little rabbit with his sudden appearance. “I left that lantern for the squirrel cubs, Lily and Jack. Why did you decide to take it?”

The rabbit lowered his head, ashamed, and answered in the faintest voice, “Oh… I'm sorry! I only moved to this forest a little while ago. I saw the lantern, but there was no one nearby. I didn't know it belonged to the squirrel cubs.”

Larry saw at once that the rabbit had meant no harm. He settled down beside him and said gently, “In our forest, everyone has a light of their own to help them fall asleep. From now on, I'll hang one for you too, so your burrow will always be bright and cozy.”

The rabbit smiled a happy smile, curled himself into a snug little ball, and slowly closed his eyes. The lantern flickered tenderly, and Larry sat beside him, keeping watch over his peaceful sleep.

The next evening, Larry returned the lantern to its usual spot, so the squirrel cubs Lily and Jack could once again drift to sleep beneath its warm light.

And the rabbit, who had grown so fond of those magical little lights, decided to help Larry on his evening journeys.

Together they lit the lanterns all through the forest, and their light grew warmer still — for now, in every single glow, a true friendship softly shone.
