The Squirrel Who Kept the Stars

High in a whispering pine forest lives Sonya, a little squirrel who loves nothing more than the glitter of the night sky. When a star tumbles softly to the moss beside her tree, she dreams of gathering enough of them to light her whole forest — until the sky grows dark and empty, and she learns what her wish has cost. A tender bedtime tale about kindness, responsibility, and the quiet magic of sharing the beauty we hold.

Deep in an old and magic forest, where the treetops brushed the very edge of the sky and the air was sweet with the smell of warm pine, there lived a little squirrel named Sonya.

Now, Sonya was no ordinary squirrel. She had one great love, and that love was the night sky. Every evening, as the sun slipped down behind the hills, she climbed to the highest branch of her favorite tree and gazed up at the stars, her small heart brimming with wonder.

One night, while she watched the sky shimmer and shine, Sonya saw something she could hardly believe. A tiny star slipped loose and drifted down, down, down, until it landed ever so gently on the moss beside her tree. Quick as a flash she scrambled down and cupped it in her paws. It was warm to the touch, and it glowed softly, like a little heartbeat of light.

“Oh, how beautiful!” Sonya whispered. And right then, an idea began to twinkle inside her. “If I gathered enough stars, I could light up the whole forest! Then even at night it would be bright and safe and cozy.”

So, with that dream tucked warm in her heart, Sonya set out to collect the falling stars. Each night she watched the sky closely, waiting, ever so patient, for the moment a star would tumble down.

And the moment one did, she scooped it up in a hurry and carried it home to her cozy hollow, tucking it away in a special little corner. Night after night her home filled up with glimmering stars, twinkling away like a secret treasure only she could see.

But the nights went by, and the sky that had once been strewn with a thousand lights began to look empty and bare. The other forest creatures noticed too. The darkness grew deeper and deeper, and the stars that had always lit their paths through the woods were slowly slipping away.

One evening, as Sonya sat in her hollow surrounded by all the stars she had gathered, she peeked outside and saw that the sky was very nearly empty.
