There was once a squirrel named Nutmeg, and she knew every branch and every hollow in her whole green forest. She was cheerful and playful and ever so friendly — she waved hello to everyone and gave a bright little smile to each creature she met along the way.

One sunny morning, Nutmeg set off for the clearing to gather acorns. Just before she went, her mama warned her gently. “Don't talk to strangers, little one. If someone calls out to you, don't answer. Scurry straight home, or find a grown-up you already know.” “Yes, Mama!” sang Nutmeg, and away she bounced between the trees.

When Nutmeg had filled her little cap right up with acorns, a great gray wolf suddenly peeked out from behind the bushes. He wore a floppy hat and dark glasses, and in one paw he held a shiny piece of candy.

“Well hello there, little squirrel!” the wolf hissed in a soft, syrupy voice. “Would you like to know a secret? I've found a hidden stash of candy — a whole mountain of it! Come along, I'll show you. Take as much as you like!”

Nutmeg blinked in surprise. “But I don't even know you...” “Ah, but I know that you're a very clever, very good little squirrel!” smiled the wolf, and he stretched out his paw with the candy.

But Nutmeg remembered exactly what her mama had said. Her fluffy tail trembled, yet her voice came out steady and strong. “No, thank you! I'm not allowed to talk to strangers. I'm going home!”

Nutmeg spun around, leapt onto a tree, and vanished among the branches in the blink of an eye. The wolf only grumbled something under his breath and slunk back into the bushes. The moment Nutmeg reached home, she told her mama everything — about the wolf, about the candy, and about the secret stash he'd promised to show her.

Mama listened closely, and then she wrapped her daughter up in a great big hug. “Well done, Nutmeg. Always remember: no one has the right to call you away without permission from your mama or your papa. And tricksters often use candy to lure trusting little ones. If anything like this ever happens again, always come and tell me. That was the right thing to do, and a brave thing too.”

From that day on, Nutmeg never spoke to strangers herself — and she always reminded her friends to do the same. Because being careful is a way of keeping yourself safe from harm.

If a stranger offers you something or asks you to come along — never say yes. Don't take anything from them, not even candy, or toys, or gadgets. Don't go with them, even if they say your parents sent them, or that something urgent has happened. Don't talk to strangers all alone — step away and call for a grown-up you trust.

Remember this: real friends and kind grown-ups will never make you keep secrets from your parents. Always tell your mama, your papa, or another grown-up you trust if something ever makes you feel worried or unsure. That is exactly what Nutmeg the squirrel did — and that is how she stayed safe.
