Milo is the smallest mouse in the village of Honeybrook, but she has always dreamed of doing something brave. So when a great hawk swoops down and threatens the harvest festival, Milo and her friends decide that someone has to be a hero — and it might as well be them. A warm, cheering tale about courage, cleverness, and the wonderful things that happen when little friends stick together.

In a village called Honeybrook, tucked between the wheat fields and the woods, there lived a tiny mouse named Milo. She was small — very small — but she had the heart of a lion, and more than anything, she dreamed of being a hero. Her two best friends, a bunny named Rosie and a frog named Felix, tumbled along on all her little adventures, from the mill to the meadow and back again.

One sunny morning, while the whole village bustled about getting ready for the yearly harvest festival, trouble came out of the sky. A great hawk appeared, wide and dark, and began to circle round and round above the rooftops. Everyone scattered. Baskets tipped, ribbons fluttered loose, and the festival preparations came to a frightened halt.

“We have to do something!” cried Rosie, her eyes wide as two acorns. Felix nodded, his little foot tapping nervously. “But what can we do? That hawk is so big, and so scary.” Milo stood up as tall as a tiny mouse can stand, and her small chest filled right up with courage. “I may be little,” she said, “but I am brave. And I have a plan.”

Milo gathered her friends close and whispered the plan into their ears. They all agreed at once and set to work without wasting a moment. Milo scampered to the old oak tree in the middle of the village and began to climb, up and up toward the highest branch, while Rosie and Felix waited below, ready to do their part.

At the very top, Milo held perfectly still and waited for just the right moment. When the hawk spotted her and dove — swoosh! — straight down out of the sky, she lifted a bright scrap of shiny foil and caught the sunlight square in its eyes. Dazzled and blinking, the hawk lost its way and swerved sharply to the side.

“Now, Rosie! Now, Felix!” Milo shouted. Quick as a wink, the two of them pulled tight a net they had woven from strong grass and leaves. The confused hawk swooped right into it and tangled up its wings — flap, flap, flap — until it could not fly a single beat farther.

The whole village let out a great cheer of relief as Milo climbed back down the tree. “You did it, Milo! You saved our festival!” Milo blushed pink to the tips of her ears. “I couldn’t have done it without my friends,” she said. “We make a wonderful team.”

From that day on, little Milo became the very symbol of courage in Honeybrook. She had shown everyone that even the smallest of all can do the greatest of things — so long as their heart is full of true and honest bravery.
