Our Valentine pages are about friends, not romance. Two hedgehogs lean in for a hug and stop just short because of their spines. A cat sits on a whole pile of paper hearts it has cut out. And a bear hugs a heart exactly as big as the bear.

A heart is one of the easiest shapes to fill: big, closed and empty inside. The row of five hearts and the stack suit three-year-olds; the letterbox and the knitted scarf have more to follow, so leave those for five to eight.

What to do with a finished picture

A card that stands up

Fold the page down the middle before coloring, then cut around the heart leaving the fold uncut — the card stands on the table.

A garland for the door

Color several hearts, cut them out and tape them along a string. Different patterns look better than all the same.

A heart with a window

Color the heart, then cut out one of the inner shapes and glue coloured tissue paper behind it so the light comes through.

Questions from parents

Are these only for Valentine's Day?

No. Hearts, hedgehogs and bears work any day of the year, and most of these pages never mention the date at all.

Which is easiest for a three-year-old?

The row of five hearts and the stack of hearts. Both are large closed shapes with almost nothing inside to stay within.

Can a child give these to a friend?

That is what they are for. Print two of the same, colour one each, and swap — the cat with the paper hearts is the usual favourite.
