Our Easter is the quiet, slightly silly kind. One rabbit hides eggs in its own ears and looks innocently ahead while one of them slides out. A chick hatches and keeps the top of the shell on its head like a hat. And five eggs stand in a row, each one patterned differently, waiting to be filled in.

The eggs and the round chicks are the easiest part: big closed shapes a three-year-old can fill without leaving the line. The basket, the little cart and the stack of three eggs have more to follow, so they suit five to eight.

What to do with a finished picture

A basket of real eggs

Color the eggs, cut them out along the outline and stand them in a real basket — they last longer than the boiled ones.

An egg that opens

Fold the page in half through the middle of the big egg before coloring, then cut the top half open so the egg has a lid.

A garland across the window

Color several eggs, punch a hole in the top of each and thread them on a string — the light comes through the paper.

Questions from parents

Which of these are easiest for a small child?

The row of patterned eggs and the chick with the shell hat. Both are large closed shapes with almost nothing inside them to stay within.

Do I need special paper?

No. Ordinary printer paper is enough for pencils and felt tips. Use slightly thicker paper only if you plan to paint with water.

Can these be used after Easter?

Yes — rabbits, chicks and lambs are simply spring animals, and children color them happily all through March and April.
