Spring here is mostly small animals dealing with water. A duckling has found a puddle that fits exactly around its feet and could not be prouder. A frog is sitting on a lily pad slightly too small, with its back feet over the edge. And a hedgehog has acquired four rubber boots.

Ducklings and frogs are big smooth shapes, so those pages suit three-year-olds. The kite in the tree and the three animals under one umbrella have more to follow — better for five to eight.

What to do with a finished picture

A puddle that shines

Colour the puddle, then glue a piece of kitchen foil over it and trim to the outline — it catches the light like real water.

Boots on the window

Colour the row of five boots, cut them out and line them up along the windowsill.

A kite that really has a tail

Colour the kite, cut it out and tape a strip of ribbon to the bottom corner — it flutters when you carry it.

Which pages suit the youngest children?

The duckling in the puddle and the frog on the lily pad. Both are single large shapes with almost nothing inside them.

Is there anything here for a rainy afternoon?

Most of it. Four of these pages are about rain, puddles and boots, which is usually what is happening outside while they are being coloured.
