Coco and the Case of the Silent Deck

Aboard a pirate ship where a single whisper can turn into the loudest news at sea, there lives a wonderfully chatty green parrot named Coco, who knows everything that happens on deck. When something goes missing, Coco becomes more than the voice of the crew — he becomes the key to a very big mystery. It's a story about noticing, about listening, and about how the one nobody takes seriously can turn out to see the most of all.

On the good ship Salty Rover, which had sailed every sea in the whole wide world, there lived more than just pirates.

The loudest voice aboard belonged to a bright green parrot named Coco. Usually he perched on the captain's shoulder or flew from mast to mast, squawking out every single thing he heard or saw. “Who ate the last banana?!” “The navigator snores like a whale!” “The lookout's holding the spyglass upside down!”

Every pirate knew the rule: blurt something out, and Coco was sure to repeat it. So the crew learned to speak as softly as they could, and they nicknamed their deck the Silent Deck.

One morning a worried cry shook the ship. “Someone's swiped our lunch from the galley! The porridge is gone! And the fish too!” The pirates eyed one another. Captain Hart poked a finger at the bosun's nose. “It was you!” “A lie! It happened before I got here!” huffed the bosun. “Or maybe it was the cook…” somebody muttered from the crowd.

And so it began — suspicions, squabbles, shouting. It might have grown far worse, if not for Coco. All at once, that very morning, he piped up: “Crunch-crunch in the night… tap-tap-tap… mmm, fishy… no, not here…” “What on earth was that?” asked the captain. “He knows something!” cried the navigator. “Follow him!”

Coco spread his wings and swooped down below deck. The pirates snatched up their lanterns and dashed after him.

The parrot landed beside an old chest and nudged the lid open with his beak — and out clambered a raccoon! “Well, I'll be!” The captain nearly sat down from surprise. “That's the very raccoon we rescued in the storm off Coral Island!”

The raccoon's name was Bobo. He'd been given a home in the hold to catch mice — but as it turned out, Bobo loved midnight snacks a great deal more than work. “Coco, you're no ordinary chatterbox,” grinned Captain Hart. “You're our very own word detective!”

From that day on, Coco was no plain old ship's blabbermouth — he became the official keeper of the pirates' secrets. And the crew understood at last: even the one who talks the most can be the sharpest listener of all. For those we take least seriously sometimes notice what matters most — if they know when to hush, and when to speak.
