Have you ever wondered how bread finds its way to your table? From one tiny seed to a warm, golden crust, this story opens the door to the marvelous world of wheat fields, mills, and busy kitchens where a real miracle is born. Bread is so much more than something good to eat. It is a real, everyday miracle — and it travels a very long way, from one tiny seed to the warm, golden crust that lands on your table.

It all begins with a single grain of wheat, a small yellow seed that grows high on a slender stalk called an ear. When the wheat ripens, the whole field turns gold and ripples in the wind, rolling this way and that like a real, glittering sea.

Then along come the harvesters — great machines called combines. They gather the wheat and gently shake the grain loose from the straw. Deep inside the combine, the grain tumbles through sieves that sweep away the husks and dust, and then it pours into a big grain tank. When the tank is full, the grain is emptied into a truck that carries it off to the mill.

Long ago, mills looked nothing like they do now. Most were tall wooden buildings that turned and worked by the power of wind or rushing water. Inside, the grain was crushed between two heavy round stones called millstones.

Today a mill is a big factory full of clever machines. They clean the grain, grind it fine, and turn it into flour — a soft, white, powdery cloud that bread is made from.

Now the kitchen magic begins. You add water, yeast, and a pinch of salt to the flour. Yeast are tiny living creatures — yes, really alive! When you feed them flour and water, they breathe out a gas called carbon dioxide. That fills the dough with hundreds of little bubbles and makes it soft and airy.

A master baker kneads the dough, working it with warm hands or in a special machine, and then lets it rest for a while so it can rise. After that, the dough is shaped into a plump loaf and slipped into the oven.

In the oven the dough bakes in a fierce, wonderful heat. When it turns golden and crisp — the bread is ready! And oh, that smell... there is nothing else in the world quite like it.

Before it can travel to the store and onto your table, the bread must cool down. Only then is it sliced and tucked snugly into its wrapper.
