Along a sunny stretch of coast lives Splash, a little dolphin who is quick, cheerful, and curious about absolutely everything. More than anything, he wants to know what hides in the deep water beyond the coral reef — but when he swims off to find out all on his own, the sea has a scary surprise waiting. This tender read-aloud helps children understand why it matters to listen to grown-ups and always follow the rules that keep them safe in the water.

In the very heart of the Blue Coast, where the waves stroke the sand as softly as a lullaby, there lived a little dolphin named Splash. He was quick, he was merry, and he was curious about every single thing in the sea.

Every morning he raced between the waves, flipped somersaults in the air, and played tag with the shiny little fish. But most of all, he longed to reach the mysterious Moonglow Lagoon, tucked away behind the coral reef in a quiet, hidden bay.

“The water there shimmers like the stars!” his mama would say. “It's also deep and dangerous,” his papa would add. “And never, ever go there without a grown-up,” said Grandma, very sternly.

But Splash was not the timid sort! One morning, while everyone was dozing after a breakfast of seaweed, he slipped quietly up to the reef and wriggled through the gap — the one that was forbidden to little ones.

“Hooray! At last I'll see the water full of stars!” cried Splash, and he dove straight down into the sparkling deep.

At first it was pure magic. The water glowed like crystal-blue glass. But all at once the sky clouded over, the wind rose, and the waves climbed higher and higher. “Oh — what's happening?” Splash gasped. “I've lost the horizon!”

Just then a wise old sea turtle named Tia appeared beside him. “Little one, are you out here all alone?” she asked. “I only wanted to look,” whispered Splash. “But now I don't know how to get home…”

Tia laid a gentle flipper on his back. “In the water you must always follow the rules. You don't yet know where it's shallow and where it's deep. You can't tell when the weather will turn. That's why little dolphins must always swim beside a grown-up.”

Splash nodded and nodded. “I'll never do it again. Will you help me get home?” “Of course. But promise me this: from now on you'll set a good example for the other little ones.” And Splash promised with all his heart.

From that day on, he told all his friends: “Into the water — only with a grown-up!” “Don't swim out too far!” “The weather can change — keep an eye on the clouds!” “And never dive into places you don't know!”

The water is a wonderful place to play, but it asks for care in return. Always ask a grown-up first, never go in alone, and never swim too far. In the water the rules keep us safe — they guard our health, and sometimes even our lives.
